'8' Anniversaries

Here are some notable anniversaries from years ended with the figure '8', including one centenary.

1318 - Shillingham private chapel first licensed for use.

1538 - First English Bible arrived at St Stephen's Church.

1588 - Saltash ship "John Trelawny" joined Fleet to resist the Armada. Her captain was Thomas Meek, who had earlier circumnavigated the globe with Sir Francis Drake.

1678 - First charter of Charles II granted.

1808 - First Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Saltash built. It was situated in what is now called Lower Fore Street, and was later converted for use as a Masonic Hall. Demolished when the Tamar Road Bridge was built; the bodies in the original cemetery there were re-buried in St Stephens churchyard.

1898 - Saltash Sailing Club formed.

1908 - New masonry viaducts at Forder and across the River Lynher came into service when the railway was routed inland. The new route obviated the need for viaducts at Wivelscombe and Grove, so the original Brunel wooden structures there were not replaced.

1918 - St Stephens churchyard extended.

1948 - Saltash ambulance service and fire brigade taken over by Cornwall County.

1958 - Longlands school closed.

1968 - Wearde school became fully comprehensive.
Stand and pavilion erected at Kimberley Statdium, paid for with part of money received as compensation for loss of Saltash Ferry.
Saltash Cattle Market closed. It occupied part of the site of the present Co-Op car park.

1978 - Postmark "Saltash, Cornwall" abolished.
New St Stephens vicarage opened.
Citizen's Advice Bureau opened.

1988 - Saltash Tunnel and Bypass opened.
