'7' Anniversaries

Here are some anniversaries of events in our local history which occurred when the year ended with the figure '7'.

1337 - Edward of Woodstock, later to be know as the Black Prince, became the first Duke of Cornwall, thus acquiring the manor of Trematon, the borough of Saltash and the ferry rights.

1587 - Sir Francis Drake brought the captured carrack, San Felipe, to Saltash where her valuable cargo was discharged and inventoried. It was worth £12 million at present-day value.

1847 - Saltash ladies rowing crew, led by Anne Glanville, competed at Hull and Fleetwood.

1897 - Victoria Gardens opened to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Saltash received its first water supply from Burrator Reservoir, by means of pipes laid across the river bed.

1927 - Saltash County School opened in Long Park Road. Its pupils entered either by paying a fee or achieving a 'special place' by means of an educational test, the forerunner of the '11 plus'.
A new Post Office building opened in Fore Street. It occupied a site which previously was part of the garden of The Mansion, owned by Dr. Robinson.

1947 - Flourescent street lighting arrived at Saltash when six lamp standards carrying five-foot tubes were erected in Fore Street.

1957 - Demolition of the old Waterside properties began. Junior School opened at Longstone.

1967 - Major renovation of the Guildhall took place.

1977 - Bishop Cornish School opened at Wearde.

1987 - Baptist Church destroyed by fire.
