INTRODUCTION - The opening of the new Tamar Bridge, and Acknowledgements.
Introduction
MAJOR PROJECTS - Two schemes that transformed Saltash's appearance
began in the 1950s. In the 'New Elizabethan Age', government grants were
available only for new housing; 'conservation' hadn't been invented! The
Waterside Redevelopment started in 1957 and finished seven years later.
The erection of the Tamar Bridge commenced in 1959. Its completion in 1961
meant the end of a thousand-year-old institution, the Saltash Ferry.

CELEBRATIONS & CEREMONIES - The people of Saltash and district
have always celebrated Coronations and Royal Jubilees enthusiastically,
and the photographs on this and the adjoining page show. Accessions have
been marked by public ceremonies of a more solemn nature, as they are caused
by the death of the previous monarch (with the exception of Edward III,
who abdicated).

SPORTS & RECREATION IN THE 1950s - In the 'pre-television era'
attendances at sports matches, cinemas, concerts, and outdoor events such
as regattas were at levels far higher than today's. For example, in this
area support for soccer was so strong that Saltash, Burraton and St Stephens
each had teams.
